CHICAGO, IL -
Three participants in The First Tee of Chicago programs will be competing at the 105th City Amateur next month after qualifying at the 1st Annual The First Tee of Chicago City Amateur Qualifier, which was held on June 22nd.  Jason Mathus, 13, his brother Devaughn, 15, and Martin Kim, 17, finished in the Top 3 of the qualifier, which was held at Jackson Park Golf Course, which also happens to be the site of the City Amateur.

Only the top 3 players in the tournament were eligible to qualify for the City Amateur.  Martin fired the lowest score of the event, shooting an 86, while Jason shot an 87.  Devaughn came in with an 88, which placed him in a tie for third place with Christopher Gee, leading to a sudden death playoff where Devaughn ultimately prevailed.

The premise of the qualifying tournament was to increase opportunities for participants in The First Tee of Chicago to play in competitive tournaments.  The City Amateur Championship is Chicago's most sought-after prize for amateur golfers, and The First Tee of Chicago Program Director Cole Hyland is thrilled to have three of "his own" in the field.

"I am very happy that some of our best golfers will have a chance to test their skills in the best tournaments that the city has to offer," Cole said, "and I know that all of the players in the Qualifier learned a lot about competition.  I would definitely like to thank Billy Casper Golf for allowing our three players to get exemptions into the City Amateur."

The City Amateur takes place July 8-11 and will have three new faces in the field.  Best of luck to Jason, Devaughn and Martin as they represent The First Tee of Chicago!

About The First Tee of Chicago

The First Tee of Chicago was established in 2000 as a local chapter of The First Tee, an initiative of the World Golf Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in St. Augustine, FL at World Golf Village, home of the World Golf Hall of Fame.  Its mission is to impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf.  At the heart of our mission are the Nine Core Values of The First Tee: Honesty, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect, Confidence, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy and Judgment. In 2010, working together with partners in the community such as the Chicago Park District and Chicago Public Schools, The First Tee of Chicago will operate programming at golf facilities located on the north and south sides of the city.
